- The tour will depart from Calitzdorp at 08:30 on
Saturday 30 September
- The cost of the tour includes all accommodation (from
Saturday 30 September to Friday 13 October), as well
as all meals and soft drinks.
- Participants must check whether visas for Lesotho are
required for their passport.
- The tour will end in Bloemfontein, capital of the
Free State Province at approximately 15:00 on Friday
13 October. Connecting flights to Cape Town or
Johannesburg are not included in the tour price, but
can be arranged on request. Accommodation for Friday
night in Bloemfontein may also be arranged if required.
- Full details will be supplied to those registering for the
tour.
The route will be from Calitzdorp, visiting the very
interesting regions of the Little Karoo and Eastern Cape
with its wide variety of succulents. From here the group
will travel to the Northern Cape and western Free State.
The last leg of the trip will be to Semonkong in Lesotho,
returning to Bloemfontein.
Plants to be seen include most of the genera listed for the
pre-congress trip, mesembs, haworthias, aloes, stapeliads
and euphorbias are common on this route, a number of
Lithops colonies will be visited in the Northern Cape. For
the first time a Congress tour will include a leg to view
Aloe polyphylla (during its flowering period) in Lesotho.
This will require a one-and-a-half hour pony trek through
the mountains (saving one a three-hour hike on foot!).
A bonus at Semongkong will be the viewing of one of
the highest waterfalls in Africa. Other succulents such as
massive specimens of Euphorbia clavaroides are to be seen
in Lesotho.
