THE NAME

Gariep is the Nama name for the Orange River, which flows through some of the richest succulent regions in the world. It is by far the longest and, together with is tributary, the Vaal River, the most important river in South Africa. The river rises in the Drakensberg Mountains in Lesotho, later it forms the boundary between the Eastern Cape and the Free State Province, at the Gariep Dam it becomes the border between the Northern Cape and the Free State From here it flows through the Upington area, becoming the border between South Africa and Namibia. For the last part, before flowing into the Atlantic ocean at Oranjemund, it winds its way around the mountains of the Richtersveld, forming the northern boundary of the Richtersveld and South Africa.

CONSERVATION POLICY

Gariep Travel recognise that the succulent rich areas of South Africa are part of our heritage which is to be protected at all costs. We thus support all measures to protect this heritage. Our field trips are definitely not collecting trips and we take all possible measures to ensure that our visits to sensitive areas do not lead to their degradation. At the same time we acknowledge the need and necessity to make plants available to people who would like to cultivate a part of this unique flora. As a part of our conservation endeavours our visits include succulent nurseries with similar conservation ethics who will make available plant material for sale.
