Eastern Cape and Little Karoo Field Trip 28. Sept. - 07. Oct. 2002

Guide: Botanical guide for the trip will be Gerhard Marx, devoted student of the succulents of the area. Gerhard has lived in Grahamstown for many years and has studied the succulent flora of the Eastern Cape and the Little Karoo extensively, he has a passion for the area.

Route: This field trip will cover areas of the Eastern Cape and the Little Karoo rich in succulent plants such as Euphorbia, Haworthia, Gasteria, Aloe, Crassula and many others. From Port Elizabeth the tour group will travel to Grahamstown for two nights, the route will then lead to the Addo Elephant Park and the coast at Jeffrey's Bay. The scenically spectacular and botanically unique Baviaanskloof will be travelled and one night will be spent in the unspoilt surroundings of the Kloof.

The group will then travel, after overnighting at Willowmore, to the Klein Karoo, a succulent paradise in its own right, and overnight at guest houses at both Oudtshoorn and Calitzdorp. From here the route will cross the Rooiberg and Garcias Passes on to Riversdale and on the last day to Cape Town, where the tour will end on the afternoon of Monday 7 October. Accommodation for the night of 7 October is not included in the tour price, but will be booked on request.

Cost: US$1650 per person. All accommodation is included and will be the best available. All meals are included as are non alcoholic beverages during the day.

Single supplement: US$80

Numbers on the tour are limited, places will be reserved on payment of deposit on a first come first served basis. A deposit of 20% (US$330) will secure a place on the trip

    Wednesday 2 October
    Addo Elephant Park - Addo ( Haworthia cooperi cooperi, Euphorbia sp. nov. aff. albipollinifera) - over Kirkwood to Kleinpoort ( Haworthia sordida, H. decipiens, Euphorbia horrida striata, E. jansenvillensis) - Springbokvlakte ( Haworthia springbokvlakensis, H. decipiens, H. nigra, Lithops localis, Euphorbia ferox, Adromischus bicolor, Aloinopsis schooneesii) - Cockscomb View ( Euphorbia albipollinifera) - Uitenhage ( Euphorbia pubiglans) - Jeffrey's Bay ( Overnight).
